African Beads and Memory
Amber
Unlike Baltic Amber, which is a fossilized amber which may be more than 50 million years old, Mauritanian "Amber" and some other natural "Amber" found in Africa are younger natural resins which are, for most of them, not fossilized and may be assimilated to Copal. Beads made from this immature natural material are highly collectable and much sought-after by Africans for making jewellery or traditional medecines.
